In the second book which Alice A. Bailey wrote herself she provides a comprehensive picture of the relationship between the soul and the personality, and how the soul and its vehicles of expression -- the physical, astral/emotional and mental bodies -- are connected through the nervous system.
    "The vehicles -- physical, astral, and mental -- are the equipment of the personality which the soul uses to experience its becoming in time and space. The purpose of the personality is to provide a vehicle for the soul to do that, because the soul cannot live at this level at its own vibration." (Benjamin Creme, Maitreya's Mission, Vol.II, p.657.)
